In presenting background for the 2011 linguistic changes in the Mass, the Wanderer Forum Foundation hopes to initiate a revitalization of faith. While many instructions to the faithful merely concentrate on the change in the words, we hope this background on the Mass explains why the change was needed to safeguard the true teachings of the Catholic Faith.
“The words of the Mass–preserved in the Latin texts–are centuries old. They speak of salvation, the conquest of death by the very Son of God. Bishops, Popes and Doctors of the Church gave much thought to the exact meanings and exact teachings to be conveyed by the words of the Mass to uphold the Catholic faith….What we habitually pray must reflect correctly and clearly what we believe, for the more we hear or recite a text, the more it becomes part of us interiorly.”–James May, Professor of Classics, St. Olaf College
“The Sacred Liturgy makes saints and saints are what the world needs more than blogs, websites, and twitter accounts.”–Fr. John Paul Erickson, Director of Worship, Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

Is there such a thing as a “poetic vocation?” What is it that the poet sees that the rest of us don’t? Veteran Catholic journalist and Wanderer Forum Foundation Board Member Frank Morriss tells us in this truly Catholic appreciation of English poet Francis Thompson (1859-1907). More than simply an analysis of Thompson and his work, this is a meditation on the poetic vocation and the depths of the spiritual life. The poet is the one who can express the inexpressible and give his reader a glimpse of the eternal. Francis Thompson is one who humbly accepted his vocation from God and gave the world an inestimable treasure. This book contains a glossary, biographical precis and the complete text of “The Hound of Heaven.” Perfect for students, teachers, and everyone who desires the beauty above all beauties.
“This meditation on the poetic vocation and achievement of Francis Thompson is a work of great love, coupled with exceptional knowledge, and therefore of great understanding. Indispensable for anyone who wants to get beyond mere literary criticism to the inmost being and motivation of the poet.”–Philip Trower, author, London, England

Growing up in a world marked by wars, disasters, family troubles, and rampant secularism, today’s Catholic teens and young adults need straight answers on their purpose in life. What better guide than a manual featuring the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas and Pope John Paul II presented by a world-class teacher and an experienced seminary instructor?
This book adapts a wildly successful high-school curriculum developed by Charles E. Rice, who taught for years at an Indiana high school in addition to his storied career at Notre Dame Law School. This classroom-tested curriculum has had life-changing effects. Rice’s students, who took the course in the late 1970s and early 1980s, credit this course for keeping them Catholic, while their peers turned to Zen, politics, or drugs in their search for ultimate meaning.
Rice, with the valuable assistance of co-author and philosopher Theresa Farnan, updates this curriculum by incorporating the Catechism and the personalist philosophy of John Paul II into the timeless wisdom of the Church. Today’s teens admire the faith more than ever, but need clear answers about what it is and who they are. The straight answers found in this book are a sure antidote to the confusion of the culture of death. Great for the teenagers in your family or for your Catholic high school’s theology courses! **This text is approved by ecclesiastical authorities for use in Catholic schools!

Never befor
e in its history has the United States been so secular and godless. Never before has there been such hostility—overtly and covertly – toward not only the Catholic Church and her teachings, but also toward common sense. This, unfortunately, is the program of the Obama Administration. Indeed, it is not inappropriate to say that we face a cataclysmic moment for the human race. The false and murderous program of the power elites (that has its origins in the Enlightenment) has already laid the groundwork for a post human age – a cold, inhospitable world where people are not cherished and loved, but valued only for their usefulness, in which human persons are nothing other than talking machines. Only through Christ and His Church can effective combat can be made to restore man to his holy destiny. We must do our part to fight and preserve that truth which has been given to us. Purchase this scintillating analysis now and engage!

When the University of Notre Dame announced that President Barack Obama would speak at its 2009 Commencement and would receive an honorary doctor of laws degree, the reaction was more than anyone expected. Students, faculty, alumni and friends of Notre Dame denounced the honoring of Obama, who is the most relentlessly pro-abortion public official in the world. Beyond abortion, Obama has taken steps to withdraw from health-care professionals the right of conscientious objection, including thousands of Notre Dame alumni who will be forced to choose between continuing their profession and participating in activities they view as immoral. And they will be forced to that choice by the politician upon whom their alma mater confers its highest honors.
Notre Dame’s honoring of Obama is not merely a “Catholic” thing. Many thousands of citizens with no Catholic or Notre Dame connections have protested it. They see Notre Dame’s actions as a capitulation of faith to expedience and the pursuit of vain prestige. Obama’s record and stated purposes are hostile to the most basic truths of faith and the natural law affirmed by the Catholic Church and many others.
Charles E. Rice first recounts the details of Notre Dame’s honoring of President Obama. He then examines the succession of fall-back excuses offered by the Notre Dame President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., and University publicists to justify Notre Dame’s defiance of the nation’s bishops and of Catholic teaching. Rice diagnoses the problem’s roots by providing an overview of the Land O’ Lakes Declaration where, in 1967, the major “Catholic” universities declared their “autonomy” from the Catholic Church. This false autonomy led to an erosion of the Catholic identity of Notre Dame and other Catholic universities. Next, Professor Rice offers a cure: Christ, who is God and the author of the divine law and the natural law.
From the Introduction:
“What [Notre Dame] is not–and has not been since I’ve been here–is a Catholic university, i.e., an institution of higher learning where the Catholic faith pervades and enriches, and is itself enriched by, the intellectual life on campus. What it is instead is a national private university that is more open to (or, at worst, more tolerant of) Catholic faith and practice than any other national private university that I know of. Or, as I like to put it in a less formal idiom, Notre Dame today is something like a public school in a Catholic neighborhood….I pray that this is not so. So does Charlie Rice. But one purpose of this book, unfortunately, is to show that the movement toward secularization at Notre Dame is much further along than most people would have believed before March 20, 2009.–Alfred J. Freddoso, Associate Professor of Philosophy, University of Notre Dame

What is Catholic Social Teaching? Oftentimes Catholics hear conflicting voices as to what exactly this essential teaching of the Church is. Now comes a solid textbook for studying that rich tradition of the Church’s doctrine; nay, more than a textbook, it is a handbook for applying the truth of Christ to the moral problems of our day! Dr. Arthur Hippler has penned this fine work at the request of Raymond Cardinal Burke when he was then-Bishop of LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
From the Forward:
“Consistent with the presentation of the Church’s social teaching as a response to the rich mercy of God toward us, represented in the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Dr. Hippler helps us to understand the individual tenets of the Church’s social teaching by guiding us through the Magisterium of the Church, which has never failed to address the Word of Christ to the situation of man in the world. Through the study of Dr. Hippler’s textbook, young people and other faithful will grow in familiarity with those texts of the Church’s Magisterium which are critical for the transformation of our society into a civilization of love.”–Raymond Cardinal Burke
“This textbook introduction to Catholic Social Teaching is outstanding. It has a clear competent focus on the Natural Law, the 10 Commandments, our common moral tradition, and the “truth that binds and limits all of us.” It includes an excellent introduction to the Biblical tradition, the early Church Fathers, Augustine, Aquinas, Conciliar teaching, and appropriate papal documents. Its focus on the key cardinal virtues essential to moral growth and perfection is very well done.”–Rev. Edward Krause, C.S.C., Ph.D.

Is it possible to build a culture of life in the United States? At least 40 million Americans have died by legalized abortion, euthanasia is accepted practice, and a pagan culture is hostile to morality and family. Professor Charles E. Rice of Notre Dame Law School says we can build that culture of life. In this reader-friendly book, he shows that the culture of death is itself dying and that we are on the winning side. A teacher of constitutional law and jurisprudence for four decades, Rice traces legalized abortion and euthanasia to their origins. He argues that the American Republic is dead and that the Constitution cannot be restored to what it was in the beginning. But this is a hope-filled book. Rice offers a blueprint for Catholics and others to witness to the Truth who is Christ. Readers will find a challenge–and discomfort–in his answers on abortion, euthanasia, contraception, public schools and vouchers, Catholic universities, “gay rights,” pacifism, the death penalty, immigration and even global free trade. “A new phase in the history of freedom is opening up,” Blessed John Paul II told the American bishops in 1998. This book will tell you why and how we are on the winning side.
